Dassel ground: till uplands and three lakes' worth of low spots
Dassel Township is farm country on loamy glacial till, and the higher fields drain and bear load about as well as anything in this part of the state. The exceptions are the lakes. Lake Washington sits between Dassel and Darwin and covers more than 2,600 acres at a maximum depth of about 17 feet, which tells you it's a wide, shallow basin with a lot of low, wet shoreline. Spring Lake and Long Lake sit just north of town off Meeker County Road 4, with Spring Lake County Park between them. Lots near any of the three run wetter than the uplands, and the water table can sit close to the surface in spring.
For flatwork that means we strip more topsoil and put down a thicker compacted Class 5 base near the lakes than we would on a farmstead south of town. For foundations it means we want to see the hole before we finalize a footing design, because a lakeshore walkout and a hilltop full basement are not the same job even when the floor plan is.
What we pour most in Dassel
In town, the work is mostly replacement. Dassel's older homes along and just off US-12 have driveways, front walks, and garage aprons that have been through a lot of winters, and heaved panels pushing on a garage slab are the most common call we get. We tear out, rebuild the base, and pour with saw-cut control joints so the new slab cracks where we tell it to.

For properties out in Dassel, Collinwood, Darwin, or Kingston Township, the permit goes straight through Meeker County Planning and Zoning on Sibley Avenue North in Litchfield. That office also enforces the county's shoreland district, so lakeshore work near Lake Washington, Spring Lake, or Long Lake gets an extra look at setbacks and impervious surface.

A driveway that connects directly to US-12 needs a MnDOT access permit on top of the local one, and we'll flag that early.
Six miles from the shop
Dassel and Cokato share a highway, a rail line, and a lot of families, and we treat them as one home market. There is no travel charge to Dassel. If a slab needs a look a week after the pour, we swing by on the way in. If the weather window opens on a Thursday afternoon, we can be there Thursday afternoon. That's the practical difference between a crew based six miles away and one working out of the metro.
